Meeting Target 13 to reduce family violence

Closing the Gap Target 13 aims to reduce family violence and abuse of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children.

About Target 13

Under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap (the National Agreement), Target 13 aims to reduce the rate of all forms of family violence and abuse against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children by at least 50%, as progress towards zero by 2031.

We are working with states and territories and First Nations stakeholders to achieve Target 13.

Ending family violence

The implementation of the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032 will help the department achieve Target 13.

A dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan 2023-2025 (Action Plan) was developed in genuine partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Council on family, domestic and sexual violence (FDSV). It aims to address the high rates of FDSV that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience.

Embedded in the strength of culture, traditional knowledge, families and communities, the Action Plan is addressing the FDSV safety needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.

The Action Plan lays the foundations for longer term structural change. It is designed to be outcomes-focused and aligned to the Priority Reforms under Closing the Gap and the priorities of the National Plan. The actions in the Action Plan are being considered and worked through by government while the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Safety Plan is being developed.
