Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan and implementation
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan
A dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan under the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032 was developed in genuine partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Council on family, domestic and sexual violence (FDSV).
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Action Plan 2023-2025 (Action Plan) recognises the disproportionately high rates of FDSV that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience.
The Action Plan works with the First Action plan 2023-2025 (Action Plan). It is fundamental to addressing Target 13 of National Agreement on Closing of the Gap - to reduce all forms of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children by at least 50% by 2031, as progress towards zero.
Development of the Action Plan included using a wealth of community, sector and academic knowledge. Activities within the Action Plan acknowledge the unique underlying causes of violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples, such as the ongoing impacts of colonisation, intergenerational trauma, and systemic and institutional racism.
The Action Plan addresses current safety needs and lays a strong foundation for longer change. Actions will be implemented while the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Safety Plan is being developed. Longer term change will be addressed through the Family Safety Plan. It will establish the future policy approach to addressing the unacceptable rates of violences against First Nations women and children.
