Monitoring and reporting
Implementing the National Agreement
There are number of Commonwealth Government reporting mechanisms that helps us track our progress to implement the National Agreement.
These mechanisms set out how policies and programs align to the National Agreement and explain the actions needed to achieve the Priority Reforms and outcomes. They also include information on funding and timeframes for actions.
Our department and our portfolio agencies track and report to the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA). NIAA is the lead Commonwealth agency for the monitoring and reporting on the National Agreement and achieve this through the:
- Commonwealth 2023 Annual report and 2024 Implementation plan
- Commonwealth Closing the Gap Partnership Stocktake
- Commonwealth Closing the Gap Actions Table

Closing the Gap progress
The Productivity Commission was engaged to review progress to ensure that the objectives of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap are being met.
The Productivity Commission will undertake a comprehensive review of progress under the National Agreement every 3 years. The first Review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap was completed and the report was released in February 2024.
The Closing the Gap Information Repository helps the Productivity Commission track progress towards the National Agreement. The repository provides users with access to up-to-date data on the targets and indicators. It includes:
- a Dashboard providing up-to-date information on the targets and indicators in the National Agreement.
- an Annual Data Compilation Report as a point-in-time snapshot of the Dashboard material.
