Disability cross-cutting outcome
About the outcome
Under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap(Opens in a new tab/window), we are responsible for the cross-cutting outcome of disability across the Commonwealth.
The outcome recognises the need to tailor actions for First Nations people with disability. This will help us achieve the targets across the 19 national socio-economic outcomes(Opens in a new tab/window) and 4 Priority Reform areas(Opens in a new tab/window).
Our role is to drive change across the Commonwealth with the aim to:
- embed this cross-cutting outcome in our practices
- assist building agencies’ capability to act on this commitment
This will ensure we prioritise the needs of First Nations people with disability in new and existing policy and programs.

Implementation
This work aligns with the implementation of Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031.
The strategy requires governments to consider tailored approaches in their policies, programs and service systems to address intersectional barriers faced by First Nations people with disability.

We are also progressing several disability reforms that will align with this outcome.

Disability Sector Strengthening Plan
The Disability Sector Strengthening Plan outlines high-level priorities and actions at a national level to build the community-controlled disability sector. All parties, through the Joint Council on Closing the Gap, agreed to this plan in-principle in August 2022.
