Applying for Transition to Independent Living Allowance

Young people leaving formal out-of-home care need a caseworker to apply for the Transition to Independent Living Allowance (TILA).

Application process

You need a caseworker to apply for TILA. This applies if you remain living with a carer or if you move out to your own place.

Your caseworker will help you apply for TILA. They will:

  • work with you on either doing a new or updating a current leaving care plan
  • check your eligibility to apply for TILA
  • agree on what the payment will be used for and when
  • apply for TILA on your behalf and manage the payment for you
  • buy the items or services you both agree on.

The TILA - Guide for Young People explains the steps for applying for TILA

The What is TILA used for fact sheet lists the different items and services you can use TILA for.

If you have read these resources and still have questions, email us at TILA@dss.gov.au

There are support services available to help you:

  • find a place to live
  • get a job or find you training
  • get financial advice
  • counselling or emotional and other supports.

State and territory case workers

If you don’t have a caseworker, contact your local state or territory government department for child protection. They may refer you to a provider in your area.

A caseworker can help you with your leaving care plan and TILA application. They can also help you with information on other supports available. The following contacts can assist in each state and territory.
