June 2021, the Australian Government released the NDIS National Workforce Plan: 2021 - 2025.
The plan outlines the Government’s commitment to work with NDIS participants, industry and stakeholders to grow a responsive and capable care and support workforce that supports NDIS participants to meet their needs and achieve their goals.
The initiatives in this plan will also strengthen the broader care and support sector, which includes aged care, disability support, and support for veterans.
The care and support sector is one of Australia’s largest and growing sectors, with 3,750 unfilled vacancies now and an additional 83,000 workers expected to be required by 2024 to support NDIS participants.
This growth is being driven by continued rapid expansion of the number of NDIS participants and an increasing number of older Australians and veterans within our community accessing care and support.
This plan complements other Australian Government reforms to build a fairer, faster and more flexible NDIS.
The plan includes 16 initiatives that come under three key priority areas.
The first priority is to strengthen entry pathways for suitable workers to enter the sector.
The second priority is to train and support the NDIS workforce.
The third priority is to reduce red tape, facilitate new service models and innovation, and provide more market information about business opportunities in the care and support sector.
The NDIS National Workforce Plan: 2021–2025 was developed to grow and strengthen the NDIS workforce to support growing numbers of NDIS participants.
It is expected that by 2024, there will be around 500,000 NDIS participants who will require support from almost 353,000 workers.
The Australian Government is committed to creating a support workforce that is capable, sustainable and reflects the diversity of NDIS participants.
Workers, NDIS participants and providers are all set to benefit from the launch of the NDIS National Workforce Plan.
Older Australians and veterans will also benefit from the Plan.
NDIS participants will have access to higher quality supports and improved service continuity.
Care and support workers will benefit from improved training and access to professional development opportunities.
Providers will benefit from better regulation across the sector and more market demand information to drive innovation and enable a more flexible workforce.
