Aim of publication

The discussion paper summarises key evidence from the literature and notes some existing good practice examples of support for young people leaving care.  Improving the experience for young people transitioning to independence is a national priority under the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009‑2020 (the National Framework).

Who is it for?

The paper was prepared with the National Framework Implementation Working Group, established to oversee the implementation of the National Framework and is for policy makers, organisations and service providers supporting young people in, and leaving, out-of-home care, as well as interested stakeholders.

What does it cover?

The discussion paper articulates a vision for the future and identifies the key actions as the first steps to improving the effectiveness of the transition from out‑of‑home care for young people that will be progressed through the Transitioning to Independence National Priority under the National Framework.
