The Australian Government has announced the new specialist disability employment program name. It is Inclusive Employment Australia - Finding careers for people with disability.

The new program will replace Disability Employment Services later this year.

The program will help people with disability, injury or a health condition prepare for, find and maintain work.

It will improve and simplify services for people looking for work, as well as employers and service providers.

More people will be able to access the new program including:

  • people with an assessed work capacity of less than 8 hours per week
  • voluntary participants not getting a Centrelink income support payment.

There will no longer be a two-year limit on the time people can stay in the program.

The new program will have an improved service offer including:

  • intensive support for people who are preparing to be ready to work
  • flexible support for people who don’t need intensive services.

We will send more information to current DES Participants before the new program starts.

The Disability Employment Centre of Excellence also has a new name. It is the Centre for Inclusive Employment.

The Centre will translate disability employment-related research into best-practice resources. This will help providers improve the employment services they offer.

The Australian Government awarded the $22.1 million grant to establish the Centre. This grant went to Swinburne University of Technology and its consortium partners. The Consortium includes representatives from peak disability and capacity-building organisations, including:

  • Inclusion Australia
  • Family Advocacy
  • Disability Employment Australia
  • National Disability Services
  • University of Melbourne.
