[48KB]The Australian Government has undertaken a review of the Paid Parental Leave Scheme, as required under the Paid Parental Leave Act 2010. The legislated review started in January 2013.
The Terms of Reference outline the purpose and scope of the review.
The review took into account the matters set out in legislation and drew on submissions, consultations, administrative data and the emerging findings of the independent Paid Parental Leave evaluation.
Australia’s first national Paid Parental Leave scheme was introduced on 1 January 2011. The scheme provides eligible working parents with government-funded pay when they take time off from work to care for a newborn or recently adopted child.
There are two payments under the scheme:
- Parental Leave Pay which has been providing up to 18 weeks pay at the rate of the national minimum wage to eligible primary carers (usually mothers) since 1 January 2011.
- Dad and Partner Pay which provides up to two weeks pay at the rate of the national minimum wage to eligible dads or partners caring for a child born or adopted from 1 January 2013.
PPL Review Steering Group
The review was undertaken by the Department with oversight by an independent Steering Group.
Public consultation
The public consultation period has now closed. The Department received submissions from individuals and organisations. Consultation forums were also held with key representative groups and peak bodies.
