Applications now open for the National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People
18 October 2024Applications are now open for the role of the inaugural National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People.
The Australian Government recently announced that an independent National Commission for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People (National Commission) will commence on 13 January 2025.
This commitment responds to longstanding calls from First Nations stakeholders for stronger accountability for the outcomes experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.
The National Commissioner will be dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights, interests and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, as well as calling out their strengths, sense of hope and ideas for change.
The National Commissioner will work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, commissioners, guardians, advocates, and other stakeholders to provide culturally safe and holistic advice on the development and delivery of policies, programs and services to ensure they meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.
The successful candidate will commence as the head of the Commission in January 2025.
